Small Elementary School NEWS
We are proud and happy to announce the completion of the "Small but Gaudi" mosaic
bench at Dora L. Small Elementary School. The community-based project was named after and inspired by the Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi who is famous for covering his structures with mosaics.
First, a special Hoorah! goes to Mrs. Wood's '05/06 2nd grade class
and their art teacher, Leslie DeGeorge, for designing the 6' x 2' underwater scene. Children (and parents) for years to come will sit
on the bench and imagine a colorful world under the sea.
Second, a volunteer & community project of this scope takes many hands and much heart. Very special thanks goes to the following: Maya
Howard for initiating the bench project as part of Schoolyard Greening; Principal Bonnie Hicks for her support and patience; Portland Trails for financial support through a community grant; Aaron Bourassa for installing the concrete form and granite legs;
Catherine Bickford for professional and technical support; Leika,
Lisa, Megan, Suzanne, Leslie and Gayle for snipping and glueing
hundreds of glass tiles; Megan, Jim and some helpful children for
assisting in the final installation. And of course, Laurie Spugnardi "Small but Gaudi" Coordinator, Parent Volunteer, Mosaic Artist & Teacher

Come by and sit-a-spell. It really is beautiful and adds so much life and color to the entrance of the school!
