Where Each Child’s Life-long Learning Adventure Takes Flight

February 2, 2010

Dear Small School families,

I hope you are finding parent-student- teacher conferences fruitful and that you now have a solid understanding of how your child is performing academically and behaviorally here at school. The halls are full of student work providing you with a great snapshot for the learning taking place at the various grade levels. Here at Small, we find the parent-teacher-student connection a powerful indicator of student success, so if you have not yet met with your child’s teacher, I urge you to call and make arrangements today. Anyone needing assistance to come to school or need someone to watch little ones may call me directly for support. We expect 100% participation.

The NECAPS or New England Common Assessment Program initial results have been made available publicly. I am thrilled to report that at first blush, Smalls’ students in grade 3, 4, and 5 have performed well, collectively. Highlighted results are as follows:

  • A whopping 92% of the third graders met criteria for Proficient (P) or P with Distinction (PD) in reading.
  • 75 % of the third graders earned P or PD scores in math with a real strong showing in the subtest of Number Sense and Operations. Overall, Geometry and Measurement subtest scores significantly exceeded district and state scores.
  • In fourth grade, 86 % of the students tested at the P or PD level for reading.
  • Fourth grade mathematicians showed very strong scores in all subtest areas (e.g., Numbers & Operations, Geometry & Measurement, Functions & Algebra, and Data, Statistics, and Probability).
  • Fourth graders coded as “economically disadvantaged” scored just as strongly as other same grade peers with 78 % scoring at the P or PD level in math.
  • 80 % of the fifth graders scored a t P or PD for reading.
  • Males scored minimally significantly higher at this grade than males in the district and state. (We are all lovers of books here at Small School!)
  • In fifth grade, Functions and Algebra was the strongest math subcategory score.
